Growing up in the ’50s and ’60s in Chicago could be crazy, but growing up in Chicago within the immigrant Slovak community was a roller-coaster ride driven by control freaks learning to live in a culture vastly different from their own. Immigration in the 1950s and ’60s was full of promise and adventure, but carried with it unexpected dangers. This memoir tells the story of how immigrants from Slovakia learn to thrive in a new world after they and their ancestors lived with the effects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Slovakian history, World War I, and World War II.
