Description

My grandson Cooper Taylor posed this question to me in 2016, and it inspired me to pick up where my father left off in gathering our ancestral history and many interesting family stories. The book also includes personal reflections from old letters, eulogies and obituaries; how the names of our children and grandchildren were selected; and an array of photographs from the 1800s to the current day.

Most of our immigrants came from England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany and the Netherlands in the 1600s and 1700s. This family history includes their stories and a look at the original lineage of the Taylors, Coopers, McLeods, Wilsons and other forebears. Some of their stories are the gold mines of our family history and I hope readers will enjoy learning about them:

  • A Huguenot girl smuggled out of France in a barrel;
  • A Southern girl who fell in love with a wounded Yankee during the Civil War;
  • A wealthy immigrant who became the largest private landholder in the Colony of Virginia;
  • The 1689 siege of Derry Ireland where survivors lived on horse entrails and rats;
  • My mother’s short story, “The Art of Non-Collecting.”
