Description

Clarence Cross Gentlemen Farmer provides historical insight into Southern life as experienced by several generations of the Cross family beginning in the early 1800s. The heavily illustrated book covers more than 150 years, which includes such events as the Civil War, World War I, and World War II, and the stories and photos shared are rich with history. What began as a simple farm in South Georgia became Cross Farms and then finally Jo-Su-Li, Incorporated with land holdings of nearly six thousand acres. Clarence Cross was president of the Georgia Hereford Association and later became Vice President of the American Hereford Association where he would make changes to the American Hereford Industry. He owned the largest herd east of the Mississippi River. From his first Registered Hereford and his crops of diversified cattle, hogs, cotton, peanuts, tobacco, and timber. His innovations to farming included crop production, soil conservation, and irrigation. Cross had the knowledge, the foresight, and the drive to make his dream a reality, which he shared graciously with all those in his life. He was a family man and not took care of his family but everyone in his employ. Yes, indeed Clarence Cross was a cattleman, a farm innovator, a philanthropist, and a Southern gentleman from whom we can learn much!
