Description
These adventure stories pull you into the lives of American lesbians from two different cultural backgrounds. In the first group of stories, Lin seeks a new life after several personal tragedies. Eventually, she meets Agnes and sparks fly. With help from Agnes, an ambitious gallery owner, Lin garners lucrative assignments to capture marketable photographs in exotic locations. Agnes’ romantic yearnings for the daring, often philandering, Lin, motivate her to accompany Lin on her photo shoots. The two middle-aged Caucasian women often venture off well-worn paths on various continents. You’re enthralled when they dare to go on safari, hike precarious mountains, confront illegal trading, and navigate unique cultures. These dicey adventures often hold shocking twists neither anticipates. In the second group of interlinked tales, thirty-something African Americans, Nora and Kalandra, each tell their own story. You see inside each woman’s longing! Kalandra discovers the existence of a Caucasian grandmother from Canada, who had deserted her New Orleans family. On a quest to find her relative and maybe a sense of identity, and to abandon her own troubled past, Kalandra asks her former girlfriend, Nora, to join her on a road trip to Canada. Nora, longing to rekindle their romantic relationship, agrees to make the journey, though worried about their reception in a foreign land. Their road trip into New Brunswick takes several surprising turns before and after they become separated in this unfamiliar territory. The stories hold picturesque drives through the beautiful New Brunswick countryside, terrifying encounters near the high tide of Fundy Bay, confrontational local folks, a still vibrant native culture, and an unnerving dog catcher who offers hope that might be unfounded. Both groups of stories offer superb details of foreign locations and riveting adventures but leave you wondering about the toll of the emotional turmoil arising between these daring and independent women.
