Description
Veralle Beck, a thirty-two year old divorced mother of an eleven-year-old son, becomes ensnared in ambition, money, sex, and drugs during the social upheaval of the late 1970s. From the steamy suburbs of east-central Alabama to urbane New York City, Veralle searches for love and validation after meeting Nicholas Franklin, an ex-pilot in the Vietnam War, who seduces her into a confusing and destructive affair.
Addicted to drugs and to Nicholas, her marriage collapses, her son becomes estranged, and her high-powered job disintegrates. Veralle tries to break away from Nicholas’ obsession with her and falls into the arms of Zachery Cohen, a New York investment banker. Incapable of choosing between the two men, she overdoses and regains consciousness in a rehab center where she must face her weaknesses and try to reclaim her life and her
child.
When Toni Cauble retired, she fulfilled a lifetime passion for fiction and column writing. She joined the all-woman international Internet group, Writers and Critters. During her battle with pancreatic cancer, she rushed to finish Alabama Baby while writing weekly tomes updating the group on her treatments and travels. Even facing such crippling circumstances, she showed an irrepressible gusto for writing and for life.
Toni almost won the race. Alabama Baby was nearing completion when she passed away in August 2012. In the spirit of fellowship and caring, the group finished and edited the book.
