Broke Rhymes, in the form of Prosetry, takes an unflinching look at society’s most deeply rooted taboos — sex, deformity, disability, perversion, abuse, poverty, bias and ignorance — while deftly destroying stereotypes in the process. Other Grown up Stories challenge our assumptions about ourselves and each other. In “Second Hand Grace,” a botched suicide in a rural Kentucky community transforms the lives of first responders in unexpected ways. “Deliberate Pit” describes a philosophical journey to wholeness, unfolding in the most unlikely place. In “Joan, Who Lives Alone,” a recent retiree struggles against the inertia of her imaginary world as she works to identify a life of purpose in Savannah. As a whole, this collection focuses on infinite perspective and the myriad faces of empathy and compassion, as they present themselves in the spectrum of imagination and reality.
